Synopsis: Nearly all of what is commonly practiced in Christianity today was at one point in the past hotly debated, refined and rewritten. The early debates were usually held in the Ecumenical Councils. An Ecumenical Council is a highly important gathering of church leaders, apostolic personages and theological specialists. Often there were other important attendees, such as: the emperor, verious bishops, and on occasion, popes. These councils were called to discuss, debate, settle and then decree various matters of the Church, whether in doctrine or in practice. The First Council of Nicea was not necessarily the first council to be held. There had already been nearly 20 other similar meetings. Thus, by the time the sixth century had rolled around, there had been hundreds of councils. These first eight Ecumenical Councils were considered the most important and most influential and are still affecting christianity to this day. In this e-book we present these Councils and the philosophical and testing questions and issues they faced over the centuries. The decisions made at these key councils between 325 and 869 AD continue to have far reaching influences on the practice of Christianity.
